Ol Seki Hemingways Mara Camp, Kenya

Perched on a rocky escarpment with far reaching views over the acacia-dotted Mara plains, this intimate, luxury tented camp is located in the Naboisho Conservancy - a secluded wilderness which borders the Maasai Mara Reserve. This area teems with wildlife and what's more, the setting in a private conservancy ensures a more exclusive game viewing experience with a lower density of vehicles than in the main Mara reserve. In addition to the daily day and night game drives, Ol Seki offers the chance to enjoy guided bush walks to learn about the area, the Maasai culture, the plants and their traditional uses. This is one of our all-time favourite safari camps and it is named after the Ol Seki tree, which, in the local Maasai language, means 'blessed'. It is traditionally a peace tree, with the branches used to settle disputes. This is apt because the creation of Naboisho, which means 'coming together', has brought peace between agriculture and wildlife in the conservancy.

Highlights

Ol Seki Hemingways Mara Camp

Sleep

The camp boasts eight spacious, stylish and uniquely designed Nina Tents which take full advantage of the stunning panorama from their elevated setting on wooden platforms with vast outside decks. They are nestled amongst Cordia and Acacia trees which attract an abundance of wildlife and birds. The interiors are sleekly kitted out in safari-chic muted tones which blend with the beautiful surroundings. Each has a high dome which centres over a double bed, and all have floor-to-ceiling glass sliding doors which open on to the large deck, so you watch the dawn break over the plains. This is luxury glamping at its African best! In addition, Ol Seki has the two-bedroomed Simba Private Villa - perfect for a family or friends travelling together. It comes complete with a kitchen, dining room, living area and a magnificent terrace with a private plunge pool. Each bedroom has its own ensuite. Guests in the Villa benefit from their own dedicated team of staff including a chef and private 4x4 game viewing vehicle with guide.

Eat

The main area of the camp comprises an extra large dining room where guests can relax in comfortable armchairs with a gin and tonic overlooking a nearby waterhole. All meals are served in the dining area unless private dining has been arranged.

An early morning game drive may lead to a picturesque alfresco breakfast in the bush, with views of giraffe and zebra. In the evenings, guests gather for sundowners by the open firepit to share stories from the day, before enjoying a delicious menu prepared by Ol Seki's superb team of chefs.

Private dining on the sunset deck by the pool or on the terrace of your Nina Tent by candlelight can be arranged. Below the main point of the Camp, there is also the chance to dine in the unique Ol Seki Cave. Previously inhabited by a traditional Maasai hunter,  the Cave offers a unique venue for a romantic honeymoon dinner.

One of the advantages of being in a private Conservancy is that you are not confined to dining in camp and, with a totally mobile kitchen, Ol Seki offers the chance to dine out on the grassy plains. Specially designed safari coolers and hampers make for the most memorable picnic lunches too!

Play

Game is plentiful and you will gain an understanding of the wildlife through the eyes of Ol Seki's incredible guides, many of whom come from local Maasai communities. All safari guides are graduates of the Koiyaki Guiding School which was established by the Naboisho Conservancy. A morning's game drive is perfectly balanced with an afternoon visiting a local village for a fascinating insight into the Maasai lifestyle. Bush picnics, sundowners and guided walks through the wilderness are all on offer.

One of the iconic experiences of a safari in Africa is a truly sensational sunrise hot air balloon flight over the Mara Reserve. You will float above the Mara River, with the magnificent animals in the Mara all visible below. The flight usually lasts about an hour and once safely back on the ground, is followed by a celebratory champagne breakfast in the bush. Horse riding can also be arranged.

Ol Seki's Tree of Life Spa offers pampering treatments after an exhilarating day on safari while the infinity swimming pool, set alongside the sunset deck with a built-in firepit overlooking the watering hole and vast plains, is the perfect spot to relax between game drives and enjoy the quintessential safari 'sundowners' at dusk.
