For many Turquoise travellers, when it comes to choosing an island in the Maldives, restaurant options are core to the final decision. Busy mums and dads like to know there will be free flowing ice creams, lots of kiddie friendly options on the menu and flexible mealtimes, to cater for all ages, at all times of day, should hungry tummies be rumbling. For couples, honeymooners and those celebrating an anniversary or big birthday, it’s often the fine dining options, the remote sandbank dinners, the private in-villa dining and array of cuisine on offer which are of most interest.
Traditional Maldivian ‘Dhivehi’ cuisine uses a combination of local ingredients, such as coconuts, fish, taro and rice –always combined with fragrant spices. Each of the islands we work with in the Maldives offer guests the opportunity to taste Dhivehi cuisine and we hugely recommend you do, especially the seafood and vegetable curries which can be enjoyed for breakfast, lunch, or dinner!

The Crab Shack at Soneva Jani Hotel & Overwater Villas
Our meal at The Crab Shack at Soneva Jani Hotel, was one of the best evenings of my life! I had black pepper mud crab, wok-fried with garlic and onion. It was so much fun too, we were given bibs to wear round our necks, we sat with our toes in the sand, Provence rose was flowing and I’ll never forget dipping freshly made bread in the delicious sauce – one for the memory bank!

The Light House Restaurant at Baros Island
The Light House restaurant at Baros Island is quite rightly one of the best-known restaurants in the Maldives. I’ve never forgotten the Lobster Bisque soup – and I first tried it 8 years ago!

Manta restaurant at Constance Moofushi Hotel & Resort
Manta Restaurant at Constance Moofushi Hotel & Resort is definitely my favourite. Even though the island is all-inclusive, the restaurant is 100% a la carte and a fine dining experience. Sommeliers will pair wine with your food choices and the seafood is caught-that-day fresh. The curries are to die for and I’d definitely say it’s some of the best food I’ve ever eaten!

Leaf at Six Senses Laamu Resort & Hotel
We had a magical evening at Leaf, the Mediterranean farm to fork restaurant at Six Senses Laamu Resort & Hotel. Walking through the herb gardens and then along the roped wooden walkway makes for an amazing entrance and the food is equally as amazing. We mostly eat vegetarian food and were so impressed with the range of veggie dishes on offer.

Asian street market at Gili Lankanfushi Hotel & Resort
My favourite meal in the Maldives was the Asian Street Market at Gili Lankanfushi. The array of food on offer was incredible and everything I tasted was beyond delicious! It was so fun to be on the beach with food stations all around – meeting other travellers, toes in the sand, under a star lit sky. Sometimes it’s not just the food which makes for the ultimate foodie experience, but the atmosphere too!
