Our Travel Specialist Sophie recently got back from a trip of a lifetime to Vietnam and Cambodia and is so excited to tell you her story! Read below her postcard from Southeast Asia…

Greetings from Southeast Asia! I have been lucky enough to be off exploring Vietnam and Cambodia and I am so excited to share my time with you.

Hoi An Town

We began our trip in the utterly charming Hanoi where wandering through its bustling streets is like stepping back in time; picking our way through the beautiful Old Quarters maze of narrow streets filled with the aromas of local street foods. We enjoyed an amazing night at Capella Hanoi, a decadent opera themed experience that I could not recommend more. However, amongst all the madness of Vietnams capital city, Hoan Kiem Lake stood like an eye in a storm – simply serene.

Our journey continued to this enchanting lantern-lit town which stole my heart! The ancient mercantile town of Hoi An was once the busiest trading port in the lands, and since being awarded UNESCO World Heritage status, it will remain this way for future generations forever. Anantara Hoi An provides the perfect base to experience every twist and turn of the French and Chinese influence that seeps through every cobblestone on the streets. The beauty of this town is best discovered simply by picking your way through a plethora of souvenir and textile shops, all lit by the most colourful lanterns you have ever seen.

There is only one way to travel South from Hoi An, and that is on the remarkable Vietage train. We began our journey with a glass of sparkling wine, sweet Vietnamese iced coffee and gorgeous warm croissants, a nod to the French influence felt throughout. Six hours rolling through Vietnamese countryside, drinking signature cocktails, dining on a three-course menu to rival most restaurants, topped off by a neck and back massage – who would ever want to travel differently?

Disembarking The Vietage, we arrived in the hidden gem of Quy Nhon. The little fishing villages beaches are picture perfect, with untouched golden sand and deep turquoise waters. The locals are warm, the seafood is mouthwateringly fresh, and it is a welcome escape from tourist crowds.

We came to Saigon fresh from our beach break, and launched ourselves into this busting metropolis that blends old and new so seamlessly. The Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica of Saigon and the War Remnants Museum provide a glimpse into the city’s history. I’d absolutely recommend exploring the vibrant street food scene, cruise along the Saigon River, and witness the city’s dynamic energy.

Angkor Wat

Our last (but absolutely not least) stop was Siem Reap, home to the iconic Angkor Wat, is a marvel of ancient architecture. The temples, especially during sunrise and sunset, are awe-inspiring. However, go a little bit further to lesser known temples such as Ta Prohm and feel like you yourself are rediscovering these lost treasures, having been reclaimed by nature for 400 years. Beyond Angkor Wat, the bustling Pub Street offers a lively nightlife, and the local markets (special note to Made in Cambodia!) showcase Cambodia’s rich culture and craftsmanship.

Every place has left me with lasting memories and a deeper appreciation for the diversity of Southeast Asia. I can’t wait to help you experience these places for yourself. Until then, sending you warm wishes from these enchanting corners of the world.
