Best for remote island paradise
Le Tikehau by Pearl Resorts – just re-opened after a significant renovation, and the fabulous Overwater Suites (Turquoise favourite!) – only 8 in total – will open in February 2025.
Tucked away in the lesser visited Tuamotu Islands, this gloriously remote retreat is a haven for those wanting to escape and unwind. Meaning ‘peaceful landing’, the very essence of Tikehau is felt as soon as you arrive, and the picturesque circle of coral atolls dotted around the 26km sapphire lagoon is a sight to behold as you glide across the water to the resort. Tikehau is heaven for divers and a honeymoon dream escape.
Best for blissful isolation
Kaikoura in New Zealand has recently gained international recognition as a Dark Sky Sanctuary, joining Aotea Great Barrier Island and Rakiura Stewart Island as New Zealand’s third sanctuary and the 22nd globally. The pristine skies of Kaikōura offer breathtaking views of the stars, unspoiled by light pollution. Stay at a fabulous PurePods just outside Kaikoura and enjoy uninterrupted views of the night skies from the comfort of a blissful eco glass cabin. Include a stay in a PurePods on a tailormade journey through New Zealand.
Best for overwater honeymoon romance
Likuliku in Fiji is closing in February 2025 for a fabulous renovation project, including adding plunge pools to Beachfront Bures, re-roofing the thatched bures, renovating the main pool and creating an exciting new restaurant concept. The resort will re-open on 1st May 2025. Likuliku proudly introduced the first Overwater Bungalows (or bures) to Fiji, and they remain a very special place and unique to stay. Twin a stay in an Overwater Bure with a Treehouse at Matangi Private Island Resort for a magical Fiji honeymoon.
Best for barefoot desert island romantic escapism
Mnemba Island, Zanzibar – Cocooned off the north-east coast of mainland Zanzibar and accessible via a short boat ride, this utterly romantic barefoot idyll in the Zanzibar archipelago is the perfect spot for a desert island honeymoon and is equally ideal as a post-safari chill-out haven! Following months of complete re-imagining (it only re-opened in October 2024), Mnemba Island is once more open and 2025 will be its first full season with the brand new look (Mnemba closes seasonally in April & May each year). Solar powered with a very light footprint, Mnemba offers honeymooners barefoot serenity and romance on a tiny island which spans just 1.5kms. There are just 12 luxuriously romantic bandas, enlarged and redesigned to provide the utmost privacy, complemented by private beach loungers with uninterrupted ocean views. The only thing left out were the windows and doors, allowing the sea breezes to blow through! Each beach banda peeks out on to the white coral sand beach from the shade of the casuarina pine forest. This is desert island romantic escapism at its African best. The open-style seamlessly integrates with the natural surroundings – perfect for post-wedding soul soothing! Savour organic, freshly prepared food (the menu celebrates the bounty of the ocean) and indulge in the island’s holistic connection (there are daily yoga classes and a wide range of wellness treatments). Mnemba is also renowned for its stunning coral reefs and there’s superb snorkelling and diving off the beach. What’s more, Mnemba is recognised as a significant breeding site for green turtles – the island team patrols the beaches daily to monitor the activity. The island has also become a sanctuary for two unique antelope species through Mnemba’s successful protection project. A personal butler is on hand to ensure every honeymoon wish is adhered to. The vibrant beach bar is the heart of the island or honeymooners can retreat to their private banda and enjoy the daybed, sun loungers and outdoor shower. Barefoot from arrival, this is a place to slip off your shoes and wash off the sand in your personal footbath outside your banda. In an effort to save the world’s oceans from pollution, Mnemba staff and guests can be seen collecting rubbish from the beach and placing it into a woven basket, which is locally known as a ‘takataka kikapu’.
