If there’s one thing Fiji knows how to deliver, it’s paradise. After years of working in, living alongside, and now experiencing family travel myself—hopping across continents and cultures—I thought I had a good idea of what makes the dream family holiday. However, I didn’t fully understand just how wonderful it could be. In VOMO Island, Fiji, we found an island, a hotel, and a destination that ticked every single box.
Arrival: How To Get To VOMO Private Island
Our journey to VOMO began with a 45-minute boat ride from the main island of Viti Levu and Vuda Marina, just 10-minutes by car from Nadi International Airport (pronounced Nandi). Alternatively, there’s a 15-minute helicopter transfer from Nadi Airport to VOMO’s helipad. With sleepy babes in arms, 3 year old Jasper and 10 month Alfie, we soon stepped onto the pristine sandy shore, immediately enveloped by the island’s charm. The team greeted us with traditional Fijian songs and beaming smiles—an authentic welcome that made us feel instantly at ease.
Accommodation: Luxury Meets Comfort
Our villa was everything we could have hoped for. Spacious and thoughtfully designed, it blended modern luxury with island charm. The immediate proximity to the beach, pool, and Ocean Play (watersports centre) was a hit with our three-year-old, while the ocean views from our deck were breathtaking. The beachfront villas (or “bures” in Fijian) are simple and elegant yet functional, with ample space for families who are happy to be in the same room together. The large bathroom featured a shower, a soaker tub, and there were thoughtful touches throughout, like an outdoor tap for sandy feet. Sleeping arrangements were cosy for everyone—even the cot provided was top-quality with a proper mattress. The room had a dividing curtain for privacy if needed, but we kept it open for the duration of our stay. VOMO Island Activities: Fun for All Ages
One of VOMO’s standout features is its incredible range of activities. For the kids, The Kids’ Village was a haven of fun, complete with a huge outdoor playground, tennis court, creative workshops, endless activities and a dedicated team, expert in looking after children of all ages. On our last night, we attended Fiji Night, a weekly highlight in the VOMO calendar. We enjoyed a delicious Lovo Dinner (local Fijian fare cooked underground), which we’d watched the team prepare earlier in the day. Before dinner, the staff performed a show that included the children. Our shy three-year-old was suddenly out of his seat, wearing a handmade grass skirt and a T-shirt he had painted the day before. He sang songs, danced, and waved at us with pure joy. Even as I write this, the memory brings a tear to my eye. It was a foundational experience we still talk about (and reenact!) today.
Dining: A Feast for the Senses
Dining at VOMO is an experience in itself. The chefs create culinary magic, blending Fijian flavours with international cuisine. The menu also caters to all ages, offering everything from mini pizzas and kids’ tacos to grilled fish and fresh vegetables— even mushy meals for tiny tots. I didn’t have to worry about food once, which was a huge thing for me when we were deciding where to go. The children are allowed to eat anywhere at any time, so we never had a hungry tummy the entire time we were at VOMO – if you are a parent, you will appreciate this as much as we did I am sure! Every meal was a celebration—from fresh seafood platters to themed dinners under the stars, more often than not, serenaded by live music.
Adult Time: Date Nights
Although we travelled as a family, staying at VOMO gave us the opportunity to enjoy time as a couple almost every night. We dined together at adults-only Rocks Bar or the main restaurant, soaking up the magic of uninterrupted conversations and delicious food. One unforgettable evening, we convinced our three-year-old to join the Kids’ Village crew for dinner. Meanwhile, we sipped cocktails under a sky ablaze with one of the most stunning sunsets we’ve ever seen. Guest Experience Manager Tim and Director of Operations Michael made those moments even more special by sharing stories about VOMO. As such a family orientated island, it might seem odd that there would be an adult only restaurant, bar and pool at VOMO. However, it is the key to providing the balance that every parent is looking for and now that we’ve been, I understand completely the island’s decision to create this space, it’s genius.
Family Island Holidays At VOMO
What truly sets VOMO apart is its balance. It’s luxurious yet unpretentious, offering families the chance to reconnect in a setting that feels both exclusive and welcoming.
Flexibility is key here: your stay includes a Baby Butler for under-fours, up to four hours a day, allowing us to enjoy adult time, knowing the kids were well cared for. Having the same friendly nanny all week made transitions seamless, and we could arrange babysitting with just a message. Practical details also stood out: a laundry service for up to 20 items daily, a well-stocked shop for essentials like sunscreen and nappies, and an on-site doctor who quickly addressed an ear infection for our youngest. VOMO also attracts like-minded families, and we cherished the friendships forged over shared experiences—from long poolside lunches to beach games with the children.
Leaving a Piece of Your Heart
Saying goodbye to VOMO was harder than we expected. As the boat pulled away, we watched the island fade into the horizon, knowing we’d left a piece of our hearts there. The memories we created—building sandcastles, teaching our toddler to snorkel, jumping into the pool a thousand times a day, sharing meals, taking naps on sun loungers, meeting new people, and completely relaxing into island life—will stay with us forever. When I asked my family their favourite part of the trip, my husband immediately said, “the resort team.” From Sai at the bar to Tamani at Ocean Play, every smiling face made the holiday unforgettable for him. Jasper’s answer was immediate: “The swimming pool and mango slushies!” For me, it was the countless moments of pure joy and gratitude, knowing I was experiencing something truly once-in-a-lifetime with my family, while also feeling utterly pampered and relaxed—who knew that was even possible!? As for Alfie? His answer would likely be the cuddles from every team member and his wonderful nanny, Ruthie, who we’re still in touch with.
