Six Sense Koh Samui
I was lucky enough to visit Six Senses Koh Samui in March of this year. After roughing it in beach huts and shacks, it felt like I had arrived in heaven.
Senses is located on the north eastern tip of the island and folds it self around a peninsula boasting views over to Buddha beach, and across to the island of Koh Phangan. Accommodation is hidden amongst the vegetation and the natural materials used in the building work are forgiving to the surroundings. The communal areas are subtly modern, with laptops hidden in ornate wooden boxes, and bamboo canes hiding the showers around the pool. The main infinity pool looks out to a small island just off the coast and you can wind away your days having drinks topped up by the fabulous and dedicated Senses staff.
The main restaurant offers a fabulous selection of foods throughout the day, and with views out over the ocean, your every expectation will be met. The speciality and award winning restaurant ‘Dining on the Rocks’ is set across 9 decks at different levels offering views across the ocean and both open air and covered seating The food is designed to inspire using fresh local products. In villa dining offers a vast menu for you to enjoy by your private pool or on your decking.
The 66 villas are dotted amongst the greenery and are reached by, sometimes quite steep, private stair cases – you can choose between sunrise or sunset views. 52 of the villas offer good sized private plunge pools, and all have a large amount of outside space. Inside rooms offer beds with views out across the ocean and white drapes. Bathrooms have sunken baths, and outdoor showers. I strongly advise wearing bug spray when you go to bed!
I never got to experience the spa but there are a large number of treatment rooms. It’s advisable to book on arrival if you are only there for a few days as they do get busy in the mornings and early evening when it’s cooler. There are also a variety of activities to join in on, including yoga, water sports and art classes.
The hotel has its own fleet of cars that will happily drop you at the nearby town of Chaweng for a lively night out, or at Bhoput for a quiet beach front meal. Taxis are located at the end of the hotels driveway if you would rather take one of them. Hiring a car is easy on the island and you can drive round the whole thing in 2 hours. Dining out can be anything from £2 per head up, depending on how brave you are in experiencing the small local restaurants. You are close to the pier so day trips to Koh Phangan can easily be arranged, as well as seeing the islands waterfalls or the National Marine Park.
With an elegant and romantic feel, the Six Senses Koh Samui is ideal for couples and honeymooners alike, who desire the ultimate in privacy and relaxation. I would recommend it to anyone and would definitely return myself should I ever be lucky enough to visit the island again.
