Looking for a luxurious escape? You’re in luck, because there are some incredible hidden islands out there, many of which are perfect for that holiday escape you’ve been longing for. Two of our favourite hidden island destinations are Vanuatu and Samoa. Both are across the world in the South Pacific, so more frequently visited by our friends down under, but well worth it for you when you’re looking for something that’s new and different from all of your other holiday excursions.
Vanuatu is a diverse, gorgeous archipelago of 83 islands set in the South Pacific ocean. The islands are incredibly different from one another, covering the range from volcanoes and rainforests to lovely sandy beaches and culture rich villages and lifestyles. The country only became independent in 1980 and was previously known as the New Hebrides. Efate is the main island, where you’ll find the country’s capital and a number of lovely island retreats. A few of the other islands have also developed tourism infrastructure.
For example, when you go to White Grass Ocean Resort, you’ll be smack in the middle of a gorgeous landscape featuring a live volcano and beautiful white sand beach. Snorkelling is nearby if you’re hankering after a view of the coral reefs, too. 4WD safaris through the island are particularly appealing, especially when you add in a visit to a local village and witness local culture for yourself. Why not take your jeep all the way up to the volcano and witness nature’s majesty at its most powerful?
On the main island, Efate, Iririki Island Resort is situated on a 69 acre private island in Port Vila Harbour. Formerly the home of the British High Commissioner of the New Hebrides, the island is now the home of this lovely resort. A ferry ride is required back to Port Vila, but as this only takes 3 minutes and is available 24 / 7 on demand, you get all of the privacy of the exclusive island and none of the drawbacks. Plus, there is now the original resort, catering only for adults, and a new addition which is completely child-friendly and has fifty four brand new suites for families.
What about Samoa? Samoa is relatively new to tourism and one of luxury travel’s best kept secrets. Its array of luxury hotels does not yet match that of other island havens, but in some ways, this just makes a trip to Samoa that much more valuable. The country is small, with just ten islands, only two of which are relatively large. Upolu is the island where you will most likely choose to stay, with an incredible range of black and white sand beaches, hidden coves, and gorgeous, endless expanses of turquoise blue water.
Sinalei Reef Resort and Spa is our accommodation of choice; comfortably ensconced within 33 acres of beautiful tropical gardens along with an expanse of perfect white sand beach, this lovely resort is an idyll. Beachside fales open out, naturally, to the soft waves of the ocean, the perfect choice for beach bums and romantics alike. Ideal for honeymooners is a villa designed just for them, which is the most secluded of all the bures and has a very modern design with a private plunge pool and gazebo.
When you need that island seclusion, that absolute escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life, look no further than those two lovely islands.
