In the Maldives, we’re blessed with plenty of options when it comes to luxury island retreats. Across a series of blogs, we’ve handpicked some of our far-flung favourites so you can get a flavour of what each of these beautiful boltholes has to offer in terms of its whereabouts, food, accommodation and unique experiences. It’s the turn of classic yet contemporary Milaidhoo…
Location, location, location
Floating in the UNESCO-protected Baa Atoll, Milaidhoo is a tiny flash of green amid the Indian Ocean blue. It’s a simple 35-minute seaplane from Malé, surrounded by neon-like aquamarine waters and studded with gently swaying palms. It lies very close to Hanifaru Bay, a well-known hotspot for manta rays.
Food for thought
Eating at Milaidhoo isn’t your typical meal out. Signature restaurant Ba’theli is unique, set on a trio on traditional dhonis (fishing boats) and serving modern Maldivian fare. Visit the adjacent Lounge after dark for a drink, where it feels like you’ll sail off into the sunset! Elsewhere, The Shoreline Grill is sumptuous seafood by the sand and Ocean prides on its fresh flavours.
A good night’s sleep
Generously spacious whether you’re on the beach or over the water, every villa comes with its own infinity pool, vast sundeck and daybeds large enough for star-fishing. Inside, the decor is streaked with blues and turquoises (which we love, obviously) in reference to the Maldives’ marine heritage.
Fun fact
Ba’theli is unique enough in being the only restaurant in the world set on a dhoni in a lagoon, but it’s also the only one in the country serving modern Maldivian food.
Our Turquoise tip
Milaidhoo also has its own deserted sandbank, the perfect place for couples to have a romantic picnic or sleep out under the stars.
