In the Maldives, we’re blessed with plenty of options when it comes to luxury island retreats. Across a series of blogs, we’ve handpicked some of our far-flung favourites so you can get a flavour of what each of these beautiful boltholes has to offer in terms of its whereabouts, food, accommodation and unique experiences. It’s the turn of serene and tranquil Velassaru…
Location, location, location
Just a 30-minute speedboat ride from Malé, Velassaru is only a short ride from the airport. Pocked with emerald palms and ringed by a perfect sugar-white beach, the island is encompassed by a cerulean lagoon hiding a fabulous house reef – great if you’re a keen snorkeller or diver.
Food for thought
Even though the island’s small, its impressive range of dining options means you won’t go hungry. There are five restaurants and two bars in a variety of spectacular settings, from teppanyaki over an azure lagoon to live world cuisine cooking stations in tropical grounds. Naturally, Turquoise is our favourite restaurant at Velassaru, a mix of international and Asian cuisine under the shade of palms.
A good night’s sleep
There’s a wealth of different accommodation options at Velassaru, from bungalows enveloped by leafy gardens to dreamy overwater villas with their own pool. No matter which one you plump for, you’ll be holing up in stylish luxury where dark woods meet whitewashed walls. There’s something for everyone here.
Fun fact
Velassaru has a cheery ice cream man who pedals around the island twice a day. His tricycle has a mouth-watering array of flavours to choose from!
Our Turquoise tip
Velassaru is a great option if you want to have a chilled escape. You come here to enjoy a slower pace of life and the island is large enough for you to find a quiet corner for yourself.
