The Maldives has become the ultimate destination for romance, whether it’s for a honeymoon, an anniversary, or a special birthday trip. It’s our most popular region here at Turquoise Holidays and it’s easy to see why! Turquoise waters, white powder-soft beaches, and a true desert island experience – what more could you want from a romantic trip? When travelling long haul, many couples want to make the most of their time away, with 10 days to two weeks being the most common holiday duration. However, often the thought of staying on an isolated island for a long duration of time fills our clients with dread. By combining two islands, you can add depth, variation and excitement to a trip. Recently, I was lucky enough to check out two different islands, which I think would make the perfect combination. Here’s my thoughts on them…
Baros
A short speedboat from Malé, Baros makes the perfect first stop on a romantic Maldives holiday, as you can hop straight on a boat and be there within an hour of landing from your long-haul flight. Baros has so many elements to it that I love and as one of the original Maldivian resorts, the team really know what they’re doing. Throughout, the design and interiors have a sophisticated and classic feel to them, seamlessly blending island chic with five-star luxury. As well as this, they have the most incredible house reef, which is something that many islands now lack. With over 20 resident turtles, as well as reef sharks, rays and an abundance of tropical fish, it’s a unique underwater experience. For me, ending the day in The Lighthouse Lounge, watching the sunset with cocktail in hand, adds a real wow factor and romantic element for any couple. The icing on the cake is that Baros doesn’t allow children under nine years old, so you can be sure that your time will remain peaceful.
My room type tip: I love the Deluxe Villas, as they’re located right on the beach and have the most incredible outdoor bathrooms.
Milaidhoo
After several nights at Baros, it’s time to move on. What better way to do this than with the amazing experience of a seaplane? Combining a speedboat and seaplane minimises your travel time between islands, but also allows you to see the Maldives from a different perspective. Seaplane journeys are so unique, because you get stunning views of the atolls from above – a great photo opportunity!
Milaidhoo is a great contrast to Baros as it has much more of a modern beach house feel and the concept is so different. Baros is classy, chic and luxurious, whereas Milaidhoo aims to blend luxury with a uniquely authentic Maldivian experience. For example, here you will find the only fully dedicated Maldivian restaurant in the country, cleverly built in the shape of a Dhoni boat, making for the perfect romantic dinner experience. As well as this, the staff see each other as family members and there’s a real feeling of community throughout the island, which you’re warmly invited to join. Once again, there’s an amazing house reef, and only older children are permitted.
My room type tip: It has to be the Beach Villas, as they’re huge and absolutely beautiful. However, if you’re looking for a different experience, the Water Villas do have the wow factor, too, with private infinity pools overlooking the crystal-clear Indian Ocean.
