With stunning tropical views and beaches to die for, the Maldives is a really special place. I’ve been lucky enough to visit a few times now and I always return with some magical memories to treasure. These are some of my favourite moments from my latest trip to the Maldives, where I stayed at Velassaru and Soneva Fushi…
The food at Velassaru
The culinary options at Velassaru are just divine! You have so much variety there and the food really was amazing when I stayed. It was also really fresh, especially the fish which tasted as if it had been caught just minutes earlier. One of its restaurants, Sand, is set right on the beach and the sunset views are perfect while you’re eating. The food is just as good and I’d definitely recommend the prawns – they’re as big as your hand! The Japanese restaurant Teppanyaki, which specialises in sushi and sashimi is completely different but also delicious. Wherever I ate at Velassaru, I wasn’t disappointed!
Dining in the treetops at Soneva Fushi
I twinned my time at Velassaru with Soneva Fushi, another amazing island resort in the Maldives. The food there was also excellent and dining at Fresh in the Garden was something I’ll never forget. It’s a fantastic restaurant in itself but it has a spectacular location and I found myself eating high above the resort’s organic garden and the treetops and underneath a starry sky. My meal had lots of ingredients that had been grown directly beneath me in the herb garden, while Velassaru is also keen to buy locally for everything else that it can’t grow. I also went to the on-site observatory afterwards to have a closer look at the stars, which I’d highly recommend!
The marine life at both!
The Maldives is known for its beautiful coral reefs and both Soneva Fushi and Velassaru delivered during my stay. Soneva Fushi has a multi-coloured house reef which I felt I could snorkel all day long and never get bored. At Velassaru, I was lucky enough to stay in an overwater villa and I had lots of fish swimming around the villa because of the algae covering the pillars holding the villa up! I could have stayed there just watching them for hours – it was such a special moment for me. You can also go on an organised snorkelling trip to swim among sharks, turtles and rays approximately 30 minutes by boat.
