Starting Your Journey – Things To Do In Salalah

salalah

We started our adventure of Oman travelling to Salalah – a hidden, lesser known part of Oman down in the south known as the Dhofar province. There are plenty of interesting things to do in Salalah which is famous for its Frankincense, lush greenery, archaeological sites and pristine beaches, it is definitely worth a visit. We travelled through stunning scenery to find Wadi Darbat, a natural wonder of freshwater pools, waterfalls and roaming Camels. Stopping enroute to hike gentle mountains showcasing the coastal town of Taqah below. We then visited the Frankincense museum, traditional souqs and the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque which was all so enlightening and interesting.

Things To Do In Muscat – Wahiba Sands Desert

We then flew to Muscat and took the very scenic 4wd through craggy mountains stopping along the way at various local villas and Wadi’s, you can get a transfer direct to the desert. There are so many little things to do in Muscat and gems to discover off track that we feel a scenic transfer (which we can arrange for you) is a must do. We stopped at Wadi Arbayeen, a refreshing deep pool of natural water set among date palms where you can go for a swim followed by the famous Bimah Sinkhole, about 200 metres in land with Turquoise waters. You can also head over to the coastal town of Sur, stop for a wander and visit the little dhow factory before arriving at the desert. The desert is a very cool experience and well worth a night here. Perfect for couples and families, you can go sand duning, horse and camel trekking, quad biking – but make sure you enjoy the sunset on top of the dunes before you go for dinner.

Moving on up – Jabal Akhdar Mountains aka The Green Mountain

We left the desert early morning ready for our next adventure up to the mountains. Stopping off in Nizwa, the former capital of Oman, we visited the ancient round tower fort before wandering around the neighbouring souq which is full of spices, potter and silver before continuing our journey to the Jabal Akhdar mountain range, 2000 m above sea level. The dramatic scenery here is insane and often compared to the Grand Canyon! We loved being up in the mountains for its cooler temperature, stunning views and adventure. you can hire bikes, go trekking to find the lost villages, canyoning, enjoy peaceful picnics, archery and much more!

Back down to Muscat – The Chedi Muscat

We spent the last few nights of our trip at The Chedi Muscat, which blew us away from start to finish. The architecture of the hotel is gorgeous and so unique – it has a very romantic feel to it. We stayed in a Chedi Club Suite which was incredibly spacious and located right next to the Long Pool, which was perfect for us! You get all sorts of benefits by staying in a club room, including complimentary afternoon tea between 3pm and 5pm, and complimentary cocktails and canapes between 6pm and 8pm – this is a real treat! There are three gorgeous pools at the hotel, and the Long Pool is the best hotel pool I have ever been in. We spent our days by the side of the Long Pool drinking delicious Rosé wine and eating sushi in the sun. From the hotel, we headed into the city and visited Mutrah Fort. We climbed up to the top for amazing panoramic views of the city. This is well worth doing, although try to avoid the heat in the middle of the day! Right next to the fort is Mutrah Souq – we spent hours decided what Omani souvenirs to take home. I cannot recommend The Chedi enough – a stay there is a must when visiting Oman.
