Whilst space on land is increasingly sparce, especially in island nations like the Maldives, the sunshine is there in abundance as is, of course, the ocean. As part of LUX* South Ari Atoll’s commitment to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, they have partnered leading solar provider Swimsol, to install the largest floating solar system in the world, just off the island’s shoreline. The new solar panels, plus those already installed on every resort building roof, now produce enough energy to power all guest villas during the peak sun hours, saving more than 260,000 litres of diesel per year. The ocean benefits too, with the platforms carefully positioned over the sandy seabed rather than any coral reef, they provide shelter for juvenile fish and invertebrates. The collective aim for the Maldives is for all islands to run purely on solar energy and LUX* South Ari Atoll, is leading the way.
