At Turquoise, we love to discover the secrets of the hotels we work with, so here is the story of how The Banyan Tree group began:
In days gone by, the Banyan tree provided shelter to weary travellers. Symbolising the relief and comfort provided by nature, the company adopted the name for a special group of hotels that stretch across the globe and offer rest and relaxation to the world-weary.
“Banyan Tree provides naturally-luxurious, ecological, culture-sensitive experiences for the discerning, responsible traveller”
Thirty years ago, The Banyan Tree founders purchased a vast expanse of coastal land in Phuket, Thailand dotted by lagoons of the most intense cobalt blue. Only to discover that its beauty came not from Mother Nature, but the pollution by the previous tenant, a tin mine. Rather than walk away, they dedicated themselves to cleansing the acid-laden soil by planting more than 7,000 trees. In doing so, they transformed this ecological wasteland into the environmentally sensitive first Banyan Tree resort in 1994. Since those beginnings their passion and focus on the journey, discovery and the romance of travel remains at the core of their business today.
Banyan Tree Ungasan
The Banyan Tree Ungasan is set dramatically on a cliff high above the Indian Ocean on the very southern tip of Bali. This part of the island is much quieter than the more developed costal resorts of Sanur, Jumbaran, Seminyak and Nusa Dua, making it a haven for pure relaxation, indulgence and of course appreciating the stunning views.
