We often recommend South Africa for a culinary experience; the Cape Winelands have some of the best eating and drinking establishments in the world. Today I’ve chosen to spotlight a few of our favourite trendy restaurants and cafes in Cape Town and its surrounds; for those who are combining a city or beach break with a safari, this can be an excellent opportunity to indulge without having to travel too much more during the relaxing part of your holiday. Plus, Table Mountain, Cape Town’s impressive landmark, has been nominated to become one of the new Natural Wonders of the World – so there is a huge potential for an increase in tourism to the city very soon.
Our first spotlight is on The Test Kitchen by Luke Dale Roberts ( Ex- La Colombe), which is found at Cape Town’s coolest location, The Old Biscuit Mill, Woodstock, which is definitely one of the trendiest restaurants in the mother city and the food is utterly sublime. You can choose between 3, 5 or 8 courses, matched with wine. It is a definite must do – but you have to book at least a month in advance.
Hemelhuijs is a very stylish café on Waterkant Street which was opened by Jacque Erasmus, who was Manna Epicure. The cafe has excellent fresh food, is very creative and has a very chic setting with black walls! The good news is they are now open one night a week, on a Wednesday.
Kloof Street is a high point for cafe culture in Cape Town, with a number of trendy shops, delis, and of course cafes and coffee shops. Melissa’s is one deli and restaurant combo that features here, as well as at Constantia and Tyger Valley, and has been a hit since it opened due to its delicious baked goods, sweets, and savoury dishes. Many of the restaurants on Kloof Street, like Amigo’s and Maestro’s, are also fun and flexible as well as delicious. It’s one of the most happening places in Cape Town.
La Colombe, at Constantia Uitsig, has been voted Top Restaurant in South Africa for the last two consecutive years. Located just twenty minutes from the centre of Cape Town, this French inspired restaurant has a menu that changes daily, as it focuses on what is fresh and local, but anything you order is guaranteed to be delicious. This is definitely a ‘don’t miss’ restaurant if you’re in the area, and the hotel is simply a country idyll. The region is home to some of the oldest vineyards in South Africa and, though so close to the city, feel just like the countryside.
