This little-used term applies to all of us here at Turquoise, and as you’re reading this travel blog, it probably applies to you too! Hodophilia is simply the love of travel, a feeling of wanderlust that drives us to plan the next holiday before we’ve even embarked on the one that’s just around the corner. An eternal desire to see, feel, smell, taste and touch the exotic, the unfamiliar, the exhilarating… to leave the everyday behind and jump feet first into a new and exciting corner of the world, if only for a week or two. Derived from the ancient Greek words, ‘hodos’ meaning road or journey and ‘philia’ meaning love, a hodophile seeks travel and adventure. The shape of this adventure is a very personal and could be anything from relaxing on a white sand beach with swaying palms in the Caribbean, the Maldives or Mauritius to an intrepid, cultural journey deep into Cambodia or Sri Lanka. Perhaps you have a yearning for a brush with the Big Five in Africa or caring for elephants in Thailand. Or maybe a private sailing cruise in the turquoise lagoons of The Islands of Tahiti, a road trip around New Zealand or bear-spotting in Western Canada might be calling your name. The beauty of travel is that you don’t have to be pigeon-holed into one type of holiday, you can ‘fly and flop’ one year and be adventurous the next.
