When you think of Kenya you probably think of an epic wildlife safari but it’s also got its own fair share of beautiful beaches, too. We share our three favourite coastal retreats which show a different side of Kenya, offering a relaxing alternative (or addition) to tracking the Big Five in the country’s wild plains…
The Ocean Spa Lodge
Fronting a near-four-mile white sandy beach in Msambweni, this pioneering wellness resort has helped help the south Kenya coast on the map for wellness retreats. With only 14 private suites, this place oozes tranquillity, with only the soft ripples of the Indian Ocean the only interruption on this pristine patch of coastline. Spa treatments and yoga are the typical order of the day here, but there’s also snorkelling and diving as well if you fancy stretching your legs (and fins) among the vibrant coral reefs beneath the surface.
Kinondo Kwetu
Translating as ‘Our Home at Kinondo’ in Swahili, this boutique resort really does that intimate aura surrounding it. Set on the silky sands of Galu Beach, the Swedish owners Ida and Filip Andersson have injected cool Scandi-chic in the design, while ensuring the service remains warm and genuine – exactly like a family home. Here, the ocean is your oyster, with everything from wind surfing to water skiing available for you to try, while exclusive yoga weeks ramp up the wellbeing focus.
Msambweni Beach House
Boasting arguably the best infinity pool in all of Kenya, post-safari chill spots don’t come a lot better than Msambweni Beach House. Perched on a cliff overlooking the most perfect of deserted white beaches and the turquoise hue of the Indian Ocean, it’s a slice of coastal Kenya you’ll feel you have all to yourself. The Swahili-inspired architecture – think thatched roofs, whitewashed walls and traditional lanterns – is in keeping with its location, reminding you that you are still, in fact, in Kenya.
