- Machaba Camp, Botswana
Machaba Camp, Botswana
The name Machaba is the local Botswana name for the sycamore fig tree whose abundant plump fruit feeds a vast array of animals including elephants, baboons, bushbuck and green pigeons - little wonder it is known as the tree of life in Africa! The Machaba tree thrives in the Okavango Delta, particularly in riverine forested areas, and this delightful family-friendly tented camp enjoys a wonderful location along the riverine tree-line of the Khwai River on the eastern tongue of the Delta. This is a prime game viewing area and what’s more, the camp overlooks Botswana’s famous Moremi Game Reserve, home to a huge variety of wildlife including buffalo, giraffe, lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena, impala and African wild dog.
Machaba Camp
The camp has been built in a classic 1950’s style and comprises ten luxury ensuite safari tents, including two two-bedroomed family tents, all stylishly furnished in neutral understated ‘Out of Africa’ colours. Each tent lies nestled in a thicket of sycamore trees, accessible along lantern-lit pathways. From the tented shaded verandah, mesmerised children can watch the daily parade of animals as they come down to drink at the river. Little Dumbo and Elmer fans will be thrilled that elephants abound wherever you look, often passing through the camp in search of acacia pods on their way to the water!
Days are spent enjoying morning and evening game drives in open safari vehicles. Children can join a guide in search of nature’s treasures and at night, little ones may be lucky enough to ride on the tracker seat and hold the all-important spotlight! As darkness falls, expect to hear bloats of hippos bellowing, baboons barking and shrill sounds of a variety of birdlife! This is Africa after all! Dinner is usually served outside next to the campfire and you can expect a gastronomic safari to match your daytime adventures! The chef welcomes any assistance with cookie making too!
