Angama Amboseli, Kenya
This stunning, intimate 10 suite contemporary lodge lies in the heart of the 5,700 acre private Kimana Sanctuary in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro, just a short drive from Amboseli National Park. Set within a forest of towering Fever Trees where some of Africa’s last Super Tuskers roam – elephants with tusks so large they sweep along the ground as they walk – Angama Amboseli provides a gentle start or finish to an East African safari. Designed by the same team behind the award-winning sister property, Angama Mara, the lodge’s concept draws inspiration from the two giants of the landscape – the elephants and majestic Kili. Angama Amboseli is bold and utterly stylish, with rounded edges, rough textures and clean-lined spaces plastered in elephant grey – the exterior of the buildings is a gift from the elephants – their dung mixed with concrete! A haven for the elephant population, the relaxed resident herds and their calves saunter through the Sanctuary.
The lodge pays homage to the awe-inspiring snow dusted peaks of Kilimanjaro from every aspect. Wake up early to witness the best views of Kili directly from your bed, then venture outside to your private verandah for a cup of Kenyan coffee, while slinking into an Angama signature rocking chair. This is a place to slow down, catch your breath and savour the serenity of this magnificent setting. After all, ‘Kimana’ means ‘to stay a while’.
Angama Amboseli
With just ten suites, poised with front row views of Africa’s iconic snow capped Kilimanjaro, the lodge promises serenity, peace and seclusion. A wilderness jewel, each Guest Area and Suite has been designed around uninterrupted views of Kili, from the bed to the shower, while floor to ceiling screened doors, are all that lie between you and the mountain. Each of the suites is a mix of canvas, concrete and stone accentuated by woven rattan and grass, all in earthy, neutral colours, inspired by the surrounding landscape. The beds are super king size and can be converted into twins. There is also a Family Suite comprising interconnecting suites (with a twin bed option).
Enjoy delicious meals served in the main dining area, looking out to majestic Kili (beware the shy mountain coyly shifts between the clouds at times). The best sundowner spot is the unique mushroom shaped observation tower, just a short drive from the lodge, especially built for watching the elephants.
The Kimana Sanctuary and some of its neighbouring conservancies form a wildlife corridor that connects Amboseli, the Chyulu Hills and Tsavo West National Park. Join morning and afternoon game drives and go in search of Africa’s last Super Tusker elephants who enter the Park along a centuries old migratory path and amble through the Fever Tree forests. You can also explore on foot with a guide – follow animal tracks and pathways and get close to the resident eland, zebra and giraffes. Take a picnic and explore Amboseli National Park with a guide (just a 45 minute drive away). The land of the elephant – large herds can be seen criss-crossing the plains, all set against the famed backdrop of Kilimanjaro. See hippos and flamingos and look out for lions and cheetah in the savannah. Return to camp and freshen up with a dip in the pool.
