Mara Expedition Camp, Kenya

Formerly known as Mara Toto, before it was damaged in a flood and closed, this newly-opened, authentic yet stylish camp has the perfect balance of comfort, adventure and intimacy, in immaculate style too. As a result this camp is, without doubt, one of the Mara’s brightest gems amongst the matrix of Mara camps.

The bush camp is open year round (excluding 1 April to 14 June), located on the border of the Maasai Mara and the Mara North Conservancy, which puts it in prime position for game viewing. However, it is particularly good when the migration is in the region – the game viewing is exhilarating.

Mara Expedition Camp

Sleep

The camp itself consists of five custom-designed tents of light-coloured flowing canvas open on the horizontal side with canopied ceilings. Each of them are perfectly decorated, they include lovely colonial furniture, without going too over board. It’s perfectly done so you can really comfortable there as you enjoy what will be a wonderful experience. En-suite facilities including flush loos, bucket showers and tapped hot/cold water ensure utter comfort.

Play

To capture the action and memories professional Canon camera equipment (Canon 50D body and 28-135mm and 100-400mm lenses) will be available for guest use, and new open-sided vehicles custom designed by Dereck & Beverly Joubert (National Geographic Explorers-in-Residence, acclaimed filmmaker) allow the very best equipment for photographic opportunities.

Each day the hosts make a new plan, sometimes it’s having a pack lunch ‘on the go’ in order to game drive deep into the Reserve or Conservancy. Other times, it’s a more traditional morning game drive, returning to camp for lunch and siesta before setting off again. The beauty of Mara Expedition Camp is, due to its small size and care for uniqueness, that we never impose a set schedule on our guests. It is your safari and we are here to make it happen as you envision.

Riding in a vehicle all day works up quite an appetite, the combination of fresh air, constant discovery and searching for wildlife leaves you famished - but that is only a good thing here as it allows you to eat more of the delicious food on offer.

The camp is located in an excellent area to see leopard, the annual wildebeest and zebra migrations.
