- Rhulani Safari Lodge, South Africa
Rhulani Safari Lodge, South Africa
This boutique gem of a safari lodge lies in the heart of South Africa's lesser-known Madikwe Game Reserve, the country’s fifth largest wildlife sanctuary which borders Botswana. A four hour drive north-west of Johannesburg, with the Dwarsberg mountains to the south and the Kalahari Desert just a short hop away, the Madikwe is home to an astonishing array of animals including elephant, lion, leopard and rhino, plus a healthy population of the endangered African wild dog. What’s more, the reserve is malaria free, making it a much-loved safari destination. Set along a crest with views over the surrounding savannah, Rhulani Safari Lodge offers a respite from the wild! Rhulani means ‘relax’ in the local Shangaan dialect and that's exactly what guests do when they arrive. Owner run, the emphasis here is on unwinding and enjoying this incredible corner of the African bush.
Rhulani Safari Lodge
Rhulani was designed and built to blend in with its surroundings. Globe-trotting owners, Rolf and Marisa, have created a lodge inspired by nature's earthy tones. Guests are able to embrace the bush setting from the stylish comfort of one of the eight luxury chalets, including a two bedroom family chalet, all of which are grouped around a watering hole where wildlife gathers. Each has an indoor and outdoor shower and an oval bath overlooking the reserve. Air-conditioning, Wi-Fi, a well-stocked minibar and Nespresso coffee machine complete the scene – this is wild Africa at its best! Mosquito netting surrounds the four-poster bed, while the bedroom leads on to a private terrace with its own plunge pool and sun-loungers, all with a view of the watering hole. Everything is finished in local stone or wood which blends perfectly with the scenery. The fireplace keeps you warm on chilly evenings.
Enjoy delicious breakfasts and dinners (included) under the shade of Marula trees. Rhulani has a superb indoor/outdoor bar and restaurant and you can also dine alfresco at the boma, next to a roaring fire under the African night sky. Romantic dinners in the bush can also be arranged for couples and honeymooners.
Rhulani is renowned for its warm welcome. Guests are treated as returning friends by the proud and passionate team. Early morning and late afternoon game drives are all part of the experience here and the guides are exceptional. Early morning game drives bring the opportunity to be out in the bush as the first rays warm the earth. The rangers lead game trails on foot in the mornings and afternoons too. There is also an underground observation hide at the waterhole for wildlife spotting and a free form swimming pool cut into the native rock face - perfect for a refreshing dip after an exhilarating game drive. Take the chance to join a star gazing session to glimpse rarely seen stars through a pollution-free sky.
