Entamanu Ngorongoro, Tanzania

Imagine a place in Africa where the views are unsurpassed…where it’s all about seeing but not being seen…where it truly feels like you’ve reached the edge of the world! This small, intimate stylish tented camp is definitely it! Entamanu Ngorongoro is spectacularly set on the wild side of the Ngorongoro Crater rim, far from the crowds, tucked away and remote. This is the only camp from where you can watch the sun rise over the iconic Ngorongoro Crater and the sun set over the vast Serengeti plains. Entamanu takes ‘off-the-beaten track’ to a whole new level! Reached only via a ‘not-for-the-faint-hearted’ private access road, Entamanu sits on the north-western corner of the Crater rim where Mother Nature plays her most dramatic tricks! Be prepared to embrace the elements and the cooling temperatures as you climb through the volcanic highlands to the camp’s location at 7,000 feet. It can be cold and windy here – the high altitude sun can also be hot - but the rewarding spectacular views make the journey undeniably worthwhile.

Highlights

Entamanu Ngorongoro

Sleep

Entamanu’s six canvas tented rooms (including two two-bedroomed family rooms) are elevated on wooden platforms along the rim and all have incredible views overlooking the Crater. At night, be over-awed by the star-gazing - light pollution simply doesn’t exist here. All tents have room heaters, enormous sheepskin thick duvets, woollen rugs and cosy crackling fires to ensure that you are kept warm and comfortable whilst witnessing the sheer spectacle of wild nature in all its glory. If you are travelling during the cooler months from July to September, do pack accordingly and prepare for changing temperatures. Dining is a convivial communal affair and despite the camp’s remote location, the food is fabulous – expect the best of any safari cuisine!

Play

This side of the Crater is all yours to explore and what’s more, privacy and exclusivity are paramount here. Miles and miles of Crater highlands extend in front and behind the camp. Not only will you enjoy thrilling game rich drives into the Crater itself, but you can also experience this rare wild, remote area on foot too. This is a place where wildlife and the Maasai live side-by-side and guided hikes, which can easily last an hour or two, are a ‘must’. Early morning guided walks, returning to camp for a late breakfast or afternoon walks, ending with a sundowner gin and tonic complete with a view, provide an entirely fresh, slow-paced and alternative perspective on the Crater. It is a privilege to mingle with the cattle herders at dawn and learn about village life or head out before sunset and watch the young warriors leap and dance as the sun goes down. You can also visit a neighbouring Maasai village for a fascinating insight into the simple daily rhythm of family life in this raw, wild place. Buffalo, giraffe and the elusive leopard have all been seen not far from camp and on a game drive into the wildlife-rich Crater, you will witness dramatic views over the Serengeti whilst encountering a steady stream of game – all this, with the added privacy which comes with being a privileged visitor to this unique remote corner of the Crater Rim.
