- Chada Katavi, Tanzania
Chada Katavi, Tanzania
Western Tanzania’s Katavi National Park offers one of the greatest wildlife experiences in Africa – it is thought to have a greater density of mammals than any other Tanzanian reserve. Miles from anywhere, it is the Park’s very inaccessibility which is proving its salvation. Katavi remains the domain of only wildlife and the most intrepid of explorers. Travelling to Katavi is like travelling back in time. A thrilling experience where huge herds of buffalo and other herbivores concentrate for the rich grass of four great floodplains, including Chada. By the end of the dry seasons and water becomes limited, animals are drawn to the riverbanks. Hippos in their thousands cram dwindling pools, crocodiles dig riverbank caves and buffalo and elephant compete for waterholes. Lion, hyena and other predators know this and wildlife watching becomes ever more exciting. Katavi is a far-flung primeval bushland, and for those seeking a next level African safari, this is it! Chada Katavi offers you a front row seat to some of the best wildlife viewing in Africa.
Chada Katavi
From its elevated vantage point on a peninsula which rises out of acacia woodland, this intimate camp enjoys spectacular far-reaching views across the wide Chada Plain. Hidden beneath shady tamarind trees, and invoking the true spirit of adventure, six tents revel in their splendid isolation – each one boasting fine wooden furniture, woven rugs and crisp white Egyptian cotton. The tents are large, romantic and airy with ‘bush-deluxe’ bathrooms comprising a traditional safari-style bucket shower and eco-flush toilet with an unbeatable bush view!
Vast herds of buffalo roam the plains – and you are also likely to see lion, elephant, leopard, cheetah, crocodiles and hippo. Days at Chada Katavi can be wild beyond belief – and you will return each evening to silverware gleaming in the mess tent and glasses shining in the lamplight. This is wild Africa at its mythical best.
In addition to game drives, you can also enjoy walking safaris and ‘fly-camping’ under the African stars. This is a place for the wildlife connoisseur or the traveller who believes the African bush has no more surprises... you will undoubtedly feel like one of the last great pioneers of this vast continent! There is no place in the world that feels like Katavi and nothing gets you as close to the Africa wilderness as fly camping does! Fly-camps are so-called after the fly-sheet, from when explorers camped with no tents, just under a single tarpaulin for shade. They are the essence of safari, because once you strip away the essentials from the main camp, we free ourselves from other distractions and retreat into nature. The fly-camp will be set up somewhere hidden, deep in the Park where you can look out across miles of wilderness - somewhere to see and not be seen - somewhere to observe life from a completely different angle.
