South Coast Cambodia
Cambodia’s beautiful south coast remains relatively undeveloped compared to neighbouring Thailand and Vietnam. Sihanoukville is the country’s leading beach resort which is rapidly being developed by the Chinese with many high-rise hotels opening. However, if you venture off-shore you’ll discover pristine beaches and unspoilt tropical islands.
Cambodia’s islands have seen a number of new openings - the jungle-luxe Six Senses Krabey, contemporary beach retreat - Alila Koh Russey and Royal Sands, an all-villa resort located on one of Koh Rong’s most idyllic white sand beaches. Song Saa was the first to open in this region, a refreshingly different retreat set on pair of small tropical islands which offers unique barefoot luxury in large overwater bungalows. This beautiful lodge is designed to resemble a Cambodian fishing village and works closely to support the local community and towards restoring the islands coral reefs.
The south coast also offers a taste of the culture and history of Cambodia, especially at the atmospheric seaside town of Kep which was founded by the French in 1908. It had over 1,200 luxury villas built for the French elite in the colonial era. During the years of the Khmer Rouge many were destroyed but today some have been resorted to their former glory. You can enjoy a stay at the quirky Knai Bang Chatt for a night or two to explore. Kep is also known for its delicious seafood, notably the abundant local crab and whilst the beaches are not as idyllic and those around Sihanoukville it is possible to take a local fishing boat out to some idyllic tropical islands.
If you have the time and are looking for a bit of a adventure then Cambodia’s southern national parks should not be overlooked. A journey inland and then heading west, or even as part of an overland journey between Cambodia and Thailand, and you can to stop for an adventure at the 4 Rivers Floating Ecolodge or Cardamon Tented Camp near Koh Kong and the beautiful Cardamom Mountains. If your budget stretches to it then Shinta Mani Wild is an incredible riverside tented camp which is definitely one for the bucket list.
