Royal Sands Resort, Cambodia
Set on the beautiful island of Koh Rong with powder-white beaches that rival any found in the Maldives, The Royal Sands makes a gorgeous addition to any Cambodia trip. The island it’s nestled within is swathed in pristine rainforest and fringed by unspoilt beaches and kaleidoscopic coral gardens. While Koh Rong is a popular destination for off-the-beaten-track travellers, they often make a beeline for the opposite side of the island, leaving The Royal Sands to boast nearly 2,000ft of sugar-soft sands lapped by turquoise waters.
Royal Sands Resort
The resort’s 67 free-standing villas, some of which come with pools, are spread along the beach in three rows, each enjoying fine sea views from the bedrooms. We’d recommend the Beachfront Villas for their uninterrupted views of the postcard-perfect shoreline. Simple, uncluttered decor creates a spacious, contemporary and relaxing tropical vibe, with each room featuring super-king beds, indoor day beds and an outdoor sala. Adjoining bathrooms, with indoor and outdoor showers, lead straight to the outdoor deck and private pool (if your villa has one). Extra beds can be added to villas for additional guests, while two-bedroom Pool Villas have a shared lounge area and two separate bedrooms. The three-bedroom Beachfront Pool Villas enjoy panoramic views of the ocean from the upper floor, with two bedrooms situated on the ground level. They’re in the most secluded location at the far end of the beach.
Exquisite food is testament to chef Chau, who’s one of the friendliest chefs we’ve come across. She greets all of the guests and can create special menus to suit individual tastes on request. Enjoy breakfast and dinner at Ocean Restaurant, named after the endless views of the azure sea and spectacular sunsets you witness while dining. For a more casual affair, the poolside Chill Bar & Grill serves lighter dishes for lunch or a relaxed dinner.
There’s no shortage of activities in and around Koh Rong. A must is an island-hopping cruise, where you’ll stop off at a number of snorkelling hotspots and enjoy lunch in a laid-back local café on one of the island’s pristine beaches. For the more active, try kayaking or stand-up paddle boarding straight off the beach or in the nearby mangroves, or explore the exotic jungle setting by foot or mountain bike. Be sure to swim in the sea at night, where under a starry sky you’ll be treated to an underwater light show – the bioluminescent plankton that surround you will brightly speckle the water like fireflies. If that all sounds too much, then you can chill around the infinity pool or indulge in a massage at the Sense Spa.
To get there, fly into Sihanoukville from Siem Reap, Kuala Lumpur or Phnom Penh. Alternatively, drive from Phnom Penh (about 2 ½ hours) and you’ll be whisked over to the island by speedboat in 40 minutes.
