Lombok
A wildly beautiful island with crashing waterfalls and pristine beaches Lombok offers hill walks, hidden coves and sunsets to die for. Accessible by a 1 ½ hour boat launch or short flight from Bali, Lombok is an extremely rural island with far fewer inhabitants (and tourists) than Bali. It makes for a great combination with Bali or as a destination in its own right.
Most of the population are farmers or fisherman who still live simple lives using very traditional farming methods. One of the attractions of Lombok is the beaches which are beautiful and unspoilt with just a handful of small boutique resorts with wonderful beachfront settings. The infrastructure and service may not be quite up to that of its more developed neighbour but the laid back nature of the island and charm of the local people makes up for it.
Don’t miss out on a boat trip to nearby Gili Islands, reminiscent of Thailand’s hippy hangouts. Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air are popular snorkelling spots, surrounded by crystal clear waters well known for their vibrant corals, hundreds of tropical fish and sea turtles directly off the beach. Go for the day or even overnight, snorkel off the beaches and enjoy a chilled beer in one of the lively shack bars lining the beaches on Gili Trawangan.
