Cap Karoso, Sumba
A resort with an eco-conscious heart, Cap Karoso is the newest luxury retreat to open on the off-the-radar island of Sumba. Located an hour’s flight east of Bali and serviced by daily flights, the Island of Sumba is one of the rare places where local culture is preserved. The local Marapu religion follows a belief of a balance of nature, man and influence of ancestors. Many locals still live in traditional Sumbanese villages, where houses are built with 25-metre-high roofs and are surrounded by wild nature, wildlife and unspoilt beaches. Having fallen in love with the wild beauty and authentic culture, the European owners of Cap Karoso set about creating a retreat where adventurous travellers could experience this hidden treasure.
The result is an affordable, but luxurious, laid-back space where guests from all walks of life can immerse themselves in the community of the island and the resort itself. Guests can try creating their own local food with the help of the chef and sourced from their own farm (which hosts a local training programme in landscaping and farming) and dining is sometimes communal for guests to share and rediscover the joy of eating together.
Located on the island’s western cape, Cap Karoso boast uninterrupted views of the magnificent sunsets over the Indian ocean and the pristine white-sand beach offers safe swimming. Its position is ideal for guests to get out and explore the island by foot (there are plenty of walking trails), electric car or bikes, or by private boat charter. Guests can try their hand at traditional or spear fishing, surfing, ikat weaving, cooking classes and visit local villages. Kids will love the kids club and infinity swimming pools along with the open-air cinema. Malala Spa offers a place of calm and serenity in which to indulge your senses and invigorate your body and mind.
Cap Karoso, Sumba
47 rooms and 20 villas are beautifully conceived to offer the greatest of comfort, with a nod to local Sumbanese culture and touches of Parisian flair, reflecting the owners’ European roots. Studio Suites offer ocean views from their outdoor lounge area, and Terrace Studio’s have a larger indoor-outdoor living style. Beachfront Suites are steps away from the powder soft beach with a separate living room, a private day bed on the sand and alfresco dining and bathing.
2-Bedroom Duplex Villas offer a spacious ground floor lounge and an ocean-view terrace on the top with magnificent views over the resort. Alternatively, their 2-bedroom Ndara villas are on a single level with an ocean view and rooftop dining area. 3-bedroom villas have private pools and either a sea view or the Villa Ghan’nu has private beach access.
Cap Karoso’s restaurants and bars offer a variety of menus combining French gastronomy with local cuisine with ingredients sourced from their own farm. Located right by the ocean, Beach Club is an all-day restaurant and bar. Julang is an intimate setting offering fine-dining with an emphasis of France at a community table. Apicine mixes it up with tapas style Indo-Basque dishes served around the pool with fantastic views.
