- Lizard Island, Australia
Lizard Island Resort, Australia
Getting to Lizard Island does require a little effort. However in doing so you get a full frontal view of the only place on earth where two world-heritage listed places – the Daintree Rainforest and Great Barrier Reef – collide. A four seater plane will whisk you up and away on an hour long flight from Cairns to the far northern reaches of the Great Barrier Reef and beautiful, wild Lizard Island. Captain Cook’s postcard probably looked exactly the same when he set foot ashore here back in 1770!
Read on to learn more about what you can experience while staying at the luxurious Lizard Island resort.
Lizard Island
Lizard Island rocks a cool, barefoot vibe with polished wooden floors, whitewashed walls and wide airy verandas. Simple and stylish are the code words when it comes to accommodation choices. Garden Rooms and Suites are set back from the shore, whilst Sunset Point Villas, some with plunge pools, are high on a ridge, offering seclusion and filtered ocean views, which can be enjoyed from your artfully hung hammock. Anchor Bay Suites are right on the beach, but for sheer indulgence pick The Pavilion, perched like an eagle’s eyrie with spectacular views, separate lounge, a private garden and your own plunge pool. Think Robinson Crusoe with a touch of style, even the lizards are all inclusive!
If you crave manicured lawns and golf courses, you won’t find them here. A rugged, mountainous interior festooned with flora and fauna greets you, and the island is encircled by 24 white sand beaches and topaz blue waters. It may be clichéd but Lizard is the kind of place where you really will find that the only footprints left in the sand are yours! Here the Great Barrier Reef is your playground, filled with abounty of marine adventures right on your doorstep. Imagine floating off the beach clad in mask, snorkel and flippers into a garden of giant clams. Days pass lazily and you can do as much or as little as you like. Depending on your level of adventure and inclination there is much to keep you entertained.
Located in the far northern reaches of the Great Barrier Reef, Lizard Island is remote, wild and like nowhere else on earth. Home to 24 ivory-white beaches and an infinite topaz horizon, at the risk of sounding clichéd, this resort has got ‘honeymoon’ fimly imprinted in its soft white sands. You won’t get more of a recommendation than from our very own Australia Product Manager, Rachel Gleave who spent a week of her own honeymoon at Lizard Island.
‘I can’t think of a more romantic island escape for a special trip like a honeymoon, the beaches at Lizard are simply breath-taking. The resort will load up your private motorised dingy with an esky (Australia for cooler) full of treats – prawns, salads and champagne, a map and off you go to find your own private beach – it doesn’t get more castaway that this and you can snorkel right off the beach directly on the captivating Great barrier Reef’
Romantic Features
Sensational diving is a given; snorkelling off the beach is a must; and for the more adventurous, fishing the inner and outer reefs comes highly recommended. But Lizard Island is also a place to do precisely nothing. And once in this laze-induced state, it’s time to go spa bound for a host of died-and-gone-to-heaven massages.
Best Rooms for Honeymoons
A recent multimillion Aussie dollar refurbishment has upgraded all the rooms and suites with simple and stylish furnishings and a cool whitewashed finish. We love the Sunset Point Villas, located high on a ridge behind the beach for their seclusion – if you can stretch to it you can even have your own pool. Directly on the beach the Anchor bay Suites are our favourites but for the ultimate luxury The Pavilion has pride of place on the corner of the headland with 180 degree views, its own living space, outdoor garden and plunge pool – honeymoon heaven!
