Alkina Lodge on Great Ocean Road, Australia
As you approach these two stunning air-conditioned contemporary apartments through the backstreets of this charming fishing hamlet, you might see a sign for West Coast crayfish - buy some - as once you arrive, you simply won’t want to leave! Strahan nestles on the banks of Macquarie Harbour (the second largest harbour in the southern hemisphere) on Tasmania's rugged West Coast - and The Wheelhouse Apartments enjoy a spectacular clifftop position overlooking the fishing boats, yachts and Gordon River ferries on the harbour below. The floor-to-ceiling glass windows appear to almost hang over the cliff-edge - and the living areas are cantilevered towards the water on elevated steel girders!
The apartments are the result of a true labour of love for owners Richard and Amanda Dyson who have built and designed these stylish ‘beached fishing trawlers’. Their vision was to create ‘a sense of standing in the wheelhouse of a huge ship’, hovering high above the harbour. The maritime feel is subtly accentuated by the polished timber floors, the uncluttered space and porthole-style windows in the main door. Upstairs, the bedroom has a corner spa bath which takes full advantage of the magnificent views - and there is also a separate ensuite. Downstairs, the kitchen opens on to an expansive sundeck. Strahan sits on the edge of the pristine Franklin - Gordon Wild Rivers National Park - and a ‘must’ is a cruise on the Gordon River aboard the Lady Jane Franklin. You should also take a ride on the restored West Coast Wilderness Railway - a fascinating 35 kilometre journey through one of the world's last pristine wilderness areas.

Alkina Lodge
Each of the self-contained villas is uniquely designed by award-winning architect Glen Murcutt, featuring a minimalist and predominantly monochromatic aesthetic. Whitewashed walls are accentuated by large windows and garden-view decks that overlook areas where kangaroos often feed on the lawn. Throughout the villas, you'll find international brands, designer fittings, and high-end furniture, including a Gaggenau-equipped kitchen, Miele appliances, a Nespresso coffee machine, a Bose audio system, and Murcutt’s signature red open fireplace. Additionally, the villas boast a stand-alone Villeroy and Boch bath and a collection of notable Australian artwork adorning the walls.
Each lodge is divided into two wings: one housing four bedrooms and two bathrooms, with the master bedroom flooded with natural light from a wall of glass offering the best views; and the second wing comprising the living and dining spaces.
The Lodge is self-catering, allowing guests to prepare meals in their own luxury, fully equipped kitchen. However, onsite managers are available to cater to any need, whether arranging a private chef, providing a local guide, suggesting restaurants, or offering advice on the many sites and attractions of this beautiful corner of Victoria.
There's a multitude of reasons to choose Alkina Lodge for your honeymoon or a romantic escape, including:
- Scenic Views: Scenic views make everything that bit more romantic, don't you think? Located on Australia's Ocean Lodge Road, you'll be able to admire the area's beauty from the comfort of your room, all day and all night.
- Stargazing: Due to its remote location, the area also offers incredibly clear views of the starry night sky, undisturbed by light pollution.
- Candlelit Dinners: Guests can also enjoy a chef prepared romantic dinner, perfect for connecting with one another after a day of exploring.
