Wharekauhau, Palliser Bay, New Zealand
Set on a 5000 acre working sheep station overlooking spectacular Palliser Bay on the south-east coast of the North Island, Wharekauhau (pronounced Forry-ko-ho) blends stunning scenery, an array of outdoor activities, luxurious accommodation and wonderful food and wine to offer the ultimate wilderness retreat.
Despite its wild location, Wharekauhau is easily accessible – just a ten minute helicopter flight or a 11/ 2 hour drive from Wellington (either in your own vehicle or by private transfer). Perfect for families, there are also two 3-bedroom houses on the estate (own transport is recommended as the houses are some distance from the main lodge).

Lying at the heart of the estate, the grand Edwardianstyle country mansion is the perfect place to unwind with a good book or chat with fellow guests. Dotted throughout the estate, twelve luxurious Cottage Suites provide your idyllic refuge – each boasting a romantic super king four-poster bed, open fireplace, private verandah and wonderful ocean views!
Dinners are usually served communally, in the style of a relaxed dinner party, but private dining can also be arranged. The menus, which change to reflect he seasons, take advantage of the fine local produce.
Spectacular coastal scenery, native forests, rivers, lakes and a range of activities including hiking, horse-trekking and 4WD safaris all await your arrival. The vineyards of the acclaimed Martinborough wine region are only half an hour’s drive away – or you may just prefer to relax and enjoy the tranquillity of this award-winning retreat, which also offers an indoor heated swimming pool and gym – plus croquet, pétanque, tennis courts and a spa treatment room.
