The Last House
The final string to the Geoffrey Bawa bow can be found on the south coast of Sri Lanka, a few miles west of Tangalle. The Last House, aptly named to mark Bawa’s final private commission on the island, is a truly boutique and charmingly barefoot, beach-front bolthole. With just five rooms, here it is about escaping the crowds and settling into your home away from home. It is the perfect beginning, middle or end for anyone seeking an authentic Sri Lankan journey, as opposed to an ‘all bells and whistles’ hotel experience. Available either in its entirety for a larger group (sleeps up to 12), or as a hotel with individual rooms, The Last House has everything you’d need and more, for your Sri Lankan beach sojourn.
The Last House
Each room faces out over the ocean or towards the tropical gardens which lie at the heart of the property. Set over two storeys, choose between a ground floor room, our favourite is Atteriya, or one of the second-floor suites, our favourite, named the Cinnamon Hill, combines a double and a twin room perfect for families wanting to have their own space. Each room has its own private veranda or balcony and decorated in true Bawa style, with splashes of colour, white washed walls, stone floors and an eclectic yet tasteful array of unique treasures and antiques.
With a maximum occupancy of 12 guests, eating is a relaxed and informal fare at The Last House. The menu is a fusion feast of western, Asian and local Sri Lankan dishes and guests are invited to interact with the chef, to ensure they will enjoy what is fresh on the menu that day. Locally sourced seafood is available in abundance and the crab curry is one not to miss. Breakfast is a la carte, whereas dinner is usually a set menu or a bbq on the beach. Mark special occasions or romantic evenings with a private dinner on your balcony or out on the beach under a star lit sky.
As you might expect in a private home, The Last House is kitted out with everything you could need, from bicycles, board games and cricket bats, to body boards, surf boards and beach games. The house has its own private pool and tucked away at one end of the much sought after, yet well-kept secret Mawella Beach, known to be one of the most beautiful on the island. It is a good swimming beach for most of the year, we also love Hirikrtiya beach with a choice of restaurants, cafes and surf spots bringing a more livelier scene. Further afield, enjoy day trips fishing and snorkelling in nearby bays and beaches, visit Tangalle or journey to the Buddhist temple, Mulkirigala, a 30-minute drive away. If The Last House is your base for the duration of your holiday, we would highly recommend spending a day at either Yala or Udawalawe National Park for a safari adventure, and don’t miss a mosey in the old fort town of Galle, exploring the cobbled streets lined by art galleries, artisan shops, charming cafes and gourmet restaurants.
