- Katikies Mykonos
Katikies Mykonos
Hugging the hillside above cream-coloured Agios Ioannis beach on the island's south-western coast, Katikies Mykonos fuses the cool, classy atmosphere of Mykonos with the timeless glamour of the Cyclades. Built into the granite in the shape of a whitewashed amphitheatre angled towards the cobalt-blue Aegean Sea, the resort's cubed buildings tumble down the cliffside like a sugar-tinted game of Tetris.
Inside, the rooms are gorgeously Greek chic, dominated by the classic Cyclades white-on-white elegance but stylishly laced with royal blue trimmings. What's more, the resort feels remarkably spacious considering its compact size. This dreamy cocoon is certainly a calm space from which to soak up stupendous Aegean views but it's also within touching distance of the hedonistic lifestyle Mykonos is known for. Beach clubs like Nammos and Scorpios are within a 15-minute drive, while the twisting, labyrinthine lanes of capital Hora are a 10-minute drive away.
Though the tempting beach of Agios Ioannis can't be reached directly from the resort, Katikies Mykonos channels its inner beach club by fringing one of its infinity pools with golden sand and palm trees. Whether you're at a beach club or on your terrace, this south-western corner of Mykonos always receives the last of the day's sunshine and welcomes the island's finest sunsets, the sky majestically splashed in pinks, ambers, crimsons and yellows.
Katikies Mykonos
In contemporary Cycladic style, all of the rooms and suites at Katikies Mykonos are beautifully whitewashed, with classy white-on-white furnishings and decoration throughout and linked together by a warren of alleyways and dove-grey steps. If you were in any doubt of your location, admiral-blue accents in the furniture, cushions, sink and bedframe confirm this is unmistakably Greece. At night-time, the backlit latticed panels are a lovely touch.
All rooms come with large terraces for admiring the glittering Aegean Sea, while most are also accompanied by jetted tubs or larger private pools, which we wouldn't blame you for relaxing in all day. However, the most charming thing about them are the picket gates which lead onto the private terraces – with the village-like feel of the resort, it really does feel like you're coming home every time you walk through your little gate.
Every guest is also given a mobile 'wish phone', which is akin to having concierge on speed dial wherever you go. Whether it's room service or you're after expert tips while you're out exploring, hotel staff will help you with pretty much anything.
Katikies Mykonos has three fantastic restaurants to choose from. Mikrasia combines Byzantine and ancient Anatolian cooking in a beautifully intimate setting among the palm trees and soft sands beside one of the hotel's infinity pools. A lot of the ingredients and flavours are inspired by Mykonos through to the wider Mediterranean, from Greek lamb paired with yoghurt made in Mykonos to turbot caught in the Bosphorus. Whatever meal you fancy, they'll all arrive at your table looking like delicate works of art. Also found at this infinity pool is the Katikies Pool Bar & Restaurant, which is a great spot for pre- and post-dinner drinks, as well as a selection of gourmet snacks.
The Seltz Champagne Bar & Restaurant overlooks the Aegean and the lower of the hotel's two infinity pools, serving up a range of fresh seafood and caviar along with garden-ripe fruits and vegetables. As its name suggests, the bar also specialises in matching the finest wines and Champagnes with your meal.
Katikies Mykonos is home to two infinity pools, each of which have two completely opposite personalities. The lower of the two is more relaxed in its atmosphere and is deeper, so guests can enjoy a proper swim. Surrounding it are wooden four-poster day beds that are great for flopping back on and looking out to sea. The other pool lies at the highest point of the resort and its loftier vantage point means it boasts magnificent views across the Aegean Sea. The golden sand, circular azure daybeds and palm trees that surround the pool here add to the beach club vibes.
The resort also has its own fitness centre and its own shop, MO's Fashion Boutique. Here, you can tailor your Mykonos style with everything from artisan Greek jewellery to island-inspired clothing.
Elsewhere, the hotel's concierge (through your wish phone) can help you book a spot at a local beach club (Hippie Fish is a great option only two minutes away on Agios Ioannis beach) or can arrange a taxi to take you into Hora to explore. A wander around its whitewashed shops, chapels and shrines is as confusing as it is charming, but that's how it's meant to be: it was built during medieval times to deliberately disorientate pirates and invaders.
The hotel's A.SPA is an intimate whitewashed sanctuary that uses Lignes St. Barth products to create a wellness menu of massages, full-body treatments and facials. Many of the therapies naturally centre around the Mediterranean, as well as the Caribbean and the South Pacific.
