Katikies Chromata, Santorini

Perched right at the peak of the caldera's rim, Katikies Chromata has the best seat in the house on Santorini. It's an island that was formed following a volcanic eruption but with views this divine, you'd rather believe it had been fashioned by Greece's mythological gods.

Chromata takes its name from the Greek for 'colours', a nod to the blue sky and Aegean Sea, charcoal-black caldera cliffs and white sugar-cube villages you can spot from the hotel's lofty vantage point. The inside of this boutique hotel takes inspiration from Santorini's famous whitewashed houses and the crisp, clean interiors ensure the attention remains entirely on nature's majesty outside. Each room is built into Santorini's volcanic rock and the alcoves and archways give you the delightful sense of being in a cosy, romantic cocoon.

Katikies Chromata is nestled within the village of Imerovigli and its clifftop position has earned it the nickname 'the balcony to the Aegean'. The views are unbeatable from your own balcony or terrace and despite the sugar-white rooms being cave-like in style, you're so high up you'll feel like you're in the clouds. Naturally, it's the best spot in Santorini to watch the sunset, the nightly pinks, oranges, reds and yellow feeling so close you can almost reach out and touch them as they melt into the Aegean.

Sleep

Elegance drips from every whitewashed corner of boutique Katikies Chromata and the same rule applies for its rooms.

Each one is gorgeously white and cave-like in appearance, with the alcoves, archways and curved ceilings stylish features that are a consequence of the rooms being built into the volcanic rock. Pops of colour are subtly added throughout the room, mainly in the form of multicoloured fabric throws and violet and navy window frames and doors. However, the majority of the colour expression is left to nature herself and the private terraces or balconies that come with every room are the ideal vantage point for prime caldera views. Some even come with jetted tubs, plunge pools or infinity pools for an extra splash of luxury.

Every guest is also given a mobile 'wish phone', which is akin to having concierge on speed dial wherever you go. Whether it's room service or you're after expert tips while you're out exploring, hotel staff will help with pretty much anything.

Eat

Katikies Chromata only has one restaurant but its modern Greek cuisines helps make it one of the best places to have dinner in the whole of Santorini. Nearly every table at the Chroma restaurant is beside the cliff edge with epic caldera panoramas and depending on what time you eat, you'll be joined with either magnificent purply-pink sunsets or a speckling of stars. It's the kind of place where you'll take a while to even look at the menu as you'll have trouble taking your eyes away the view.

Like the scenery before you, the food is incredible. The focus is fusing fresh local ingredients with the chefs' modern imaginations, creating an array of contemporary Greek cuisine. To keep things even fresher, the menu is changed with every season, but expect dishes like souvlaki and spinach pie.

Three bars give you ample room to soak up the hotel's widescreen views. The Chroma Champagne Bar is a great option for sushi at sunset with a glass of bubbles, while the Aperitivo Bar provides a more laid-back atmosphere for your evening. For daytime drinks to unwind with under the Santorini sunshine, look no further than the Cocktail Bar.

Play

The hotel's main infinity pool is so close to the cliff edge, you feel like you could swim out and dive straight into the caldera. Quite simply, it's the best place in the hotel to (literally) soak up the scenery.

Katikies Chromata is also in a great location to explore the island. Imerovigli, the village in which the hotel is situated, is a pretty collection of white sugar cube-like buildings and the thin alleyways of Fira, Santorini's capital, are a mere 20-minute walk away. Further afield, the island's web of volcanic hiking trails and the Minoan Bronze Age settlement of Akrotiri are well worth exploring. For everything else, all you need to do is pick up your wish phone and the hotel's concierge will be brimming with excellent suggestions to help you make the most of your time on Santorini.

Pamper

There isn't a spa at the hotel, but all guests can use the A.SPA located at either of its sister properties Katikies Garden (three minutes' drive) or Katikies Kirini (10 minutes' drive). There's everything from massage to facials and full body therapies to help you refresh after a busy day exploring Santorini – transfers are complimentary if you've booked a treatment in advance.
