OKU Ibiza, Spain

Ibiza is an island that can be buzzing, relaxing and trendy (sometimes all in one go) and OKU Ibiza is an escape that expertly blends all three so you can peer deep into the White Isle's soul. It's a place where you can start the day with rooftop yoga, follow it up with brunch soundtracked by deep house and end with cocktails against a fiery Ibizan sunset.

OKU Ibiza's location is just as dreamy as that daily timetable sounds, nestled within pine-blanketed hills and just five minutes' walk from the butterscotch-tinged sands of Cala Gració bay. The resort channels that natural splendour in its boho-chic vibe, bringing the outdoors in with its earthy tones, dark woods and use of local stone.

This is a luxury Ibiza holiday loaded with spiritual nourishment, where you can seek solace in its refreshing juice bar, spend long lazy afternoons by the Olympic-sized pool (one of the largest on the island) and enjoy its superb culinary offering, which is spearheaded by the former head chef of SUSHISAMBA Amsterdam. This focus on wellness is epitomised by the Mediterranean island's surrounding nature, a region where the tempo is more bolero than paso doble. The word 'oku' is actually very apt: it means 'inner space' in Japanese and when it comes to connecting you with the island's true spirit, it does just that.

Sleep

With such an enviable location, OKU Ibiza wants to ensure you experience this slice of Ibizan paradise wherever you are.

With that in mind, every room and suite boasts bohemian-style decor, with earthy tones of beige, cream and hazel dominating. Their minimalist design makes you feel at ease right from the off, and natural materials such as hessian, oak, rattan and stone really add a home-from-home aura in the form of baskets, rugs and furniture. Quirky paintings by Steve te Pas add a cheeky side to the resort's character. All accommodation has a balcony or terrace, complete with wooden shutters that you can throw open each morning to glorious views of the Ibizan foothills. If you want a glimpse of the azure sea, the lofty perch of the top-floor Penthouse Rooms offer the best vantage points, as well as sprawling terraces from which to admire the Mediterranean and the nightly sunsets.

Taking the luxe factor up a notch, OKU Ibiza's six Swim Up Rooms share a secluded pool accessed by steps straight from the terraces and overlooked by a pair of dove-grey bean loungers for each room. The signature OKU Suites are remarkably generous in size with an open-plan living and dining area, while floor-to-ceiling windows and a panoramic terrace give you a front-row view of the main pool and the leafy Ibizan landscapes beyond.

If you want your own personal swimming pool, then the Private Villa is your answer. With four bedrooms and the opportunity to arrange for a private chef to serve you dinner on the expansive terrace, it's ideal for a large family of group of friends.

Eat

OKU Ibiza has two restaurants and two bars, all of which are masterly overseen by Mark Vaessen, the former executive chef of SUSHISAMBA in Amsterdam.

The alfresco terrace of To Kima Ibiza is the setting for breakfast and lunch, overlooking the resort's smaller second pool. Spanish and Mediterranean influences are prominent but it wouldn't be a Mark Vaessen restaurant without some Asian twists sneaking in there. Pick from a selection of light bites, fresh salads and sharing platters to enjoy amid a relaxing atmosphere, so laid-back in fact you can order meals straight to your sunlounger. Make sure you visit here on a Sunday: the cocktail-lined brunches are excellent.

The location for dinner is the OKU restaurant, a Mark Vaessen masterpiece of fusion food and Japanese cuisine. His cutting-edge menu draws on flavours as far and wide as Japan, Asia and South America but uses ingredients found much closer to home, such as freshly caught fish and organic vegetables grown on the island. The sashimi, nigiri and sushi is exceptional, while other plates to expect include wagyu beef, black cod, mushroom tobanyaki and ceviche seabass.

Beside the resort's main pool is the OKU Bar, which is well stocked with skillfully mixed cocktails and a handsome range of Spanish wines. You can enjoy a drink before dinner or have an after-dark nightcap set to the house beats of the resort's resident DJ. The angel on your shoulder will point you in the direction of the Juice Bar – also beside the main pool – where vivid fresh juices and protein-loaded smoothies will help to revitalise your body.

However, OKU Ibiza doesn't stop there. It's a resort that implores you to try the island cuisine, too, and isn't short of recommendations for local eateries to try. Among those up their sleeve is Can Domo, a charming establishment that mirrors Mediterranean market cuisine, and Sa Capella, a hilltop restaurant set within an atmospheric 16th-century church.

Play

What you do at OKU Ibiza really is up to you. You could really do as little as lying beside one of the resort's two pools and without a need to lift another finger (apart from to bring your chilled cocktail from table to mouth) for the rest of your holiday. OKU Ibiza's main adults-only pool is the larger of the two at 50m in length, Olympic sized and one of the biggest pools on the island. If you want to burn off some of the sashimi and sushi you'll inevitably overindulge in (it's that good), the world-class fitness centre boasts stunning wood-finish equipment to blend in with the rest of the resort.

Beyond the OKU Ibiza's drystone walls, the wider island deserves to be explored. Just a five-minute stroll away lies Cala Gració, a rocky bay laden with cream-hued sands and lapped by gin-clear waters. It's been largely undiscovered by tourists so far, so it retains an authentic local charm. Just 100m away lies its little sister, Cala Gracioneta a slender ivory-coloured beach that's only 30m wide and complemented by its namesake castaway-style restaurant – perfect for a seafood lunch.

For anything else, OKU Ibiza's concierge service is on hand to help you have wider adventures, from guided kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding trips to exploring the island on a Vespa or quad-bike.

Pamper

With OKU Ibiza's metronome set to tortoise pace, there an ample opportunities to allow your pulse to acclimatise. You can sign up to daily yoga and pilates classes on its rooftop shala, while the option for one-on-one sessions is there for those who fancy some extra tuition.

In a place so focused on wellness, you'd expect the spa to be incredible and at OKU Ibiza it is. The five treatment rooms are a serene setting for a bulging menu of treatments which lean on local ingredients and time-honoured techniques. Take it from us: you'll leave with your soul soothed and body cleansed.
