- Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge, Jasper
Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge
Located just outside the sleepy mountain town of Jasper, at the northern end of the Rockies, the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge is an iconic part of Canadian mountain history. Its story is a tale of canvas to cabin, dating back to 1915 when a basic camp of ten tents were erected by the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway workers, as they carved a path through the previously impenetrable Rocky Mountain range. Over the years, the now 700-acre plot of land on which the lodge stands today has undergone various guises and welcomed stars and royalty through the ages, from Marilyn Monroe to Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip. Hugging the shores of Lac Beauvert and framed by the staggering Whistlers Peak, it is a truly unique resort in the heart of the Canadian Rockies.
Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge
Despite having 446 guestrooms and cabins, the lodge-style layout and luxury cedar cabin abodes give it the feeling of an alpine village, rather than a high-rise hotel. Indeed, apart from the main lobby, the majority of the accommodation buildings and cabins are single storey, designed with the natural contours of the surrounding wilderness in mind. Each room, suite and cabin are accessed via a winding network of pathways leading away from the main lodge. Interiors are simple and natural, with flares of forest colours and wooden furniture. The Lakeview and Signature Cabins are perfect for those celebrating a special occasion and can accommodate anywhere from two to 12 people.
Mornings at Jasper Park Lodge are spent either at ORSO Trattoria for an à la carte menu or Fitzhugh’s To Go café, should a coffee and pastry be the order of the day. For those planning long days out in the mountains, you can also pick up sandwiches and snacks here, open from 6am each morning. Lunchtime in the hotel is best enjoyed in the Emerald Lounge & Patio, which boasts an incredible inside/outside dining menu and overlooks the lake ans forest, with Whistlers Peak on the horizon. Be sure to meet back here for sunset to experience the glowing east face of Mount Edith Cavell. In the evening, ORSO’s menu offers farm-to-table cuisine through its partnerships with Twin Meadows Farm. Alternatively, enjoy a special evening in the Moose’s Nook Chophouse, a wonderfully named rustic mountain eatery, serving hearty regional cuisine and twinned with an impressive wine list featuring many Canadian labels.
With the Rocky Mountains on your doorstep, a stay at the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge is just the start of your mountain adventure. The 700-acre property is located within the UNESCO World Heritage site of Jasper National Park and without even leaving the hotel boundaries guests can enjoy canoeing, kayaking, swimming, hiking, biking and horse riding. Not to mention one of Canada’s finest golf courses, designed by Stanley Thompson in the 1920s, the par 71 course features dramatic bunkers, forest-lined fairways, elevated tee boxes and incredible mountain vistas. For more experienced hikers, a world of fabulously maintained trails await. A complimentary hotel shuttle runs frequently between the lodge's lobby and downtown Jasper. We highly recommend SnowDome for coffee, the Bear's Paw Bakery for a freshly baked treat or the Jasper Brewing Company for a locally brewed beer. There are also a number of gift shops and as you might imagine, a plethora of outdoor and adventure shops for any last-minute bits you forgot on the kit list. Day trips to the Miette Hot Springs, Medicine and Maligne lakes can be organised in advance or through the hotel concierge team. Soothe tired limbs at The Spa – an oasis of calm oozing nature and wellbeing, before relaxing in the open-air hot tub or outdoor pool.
