Knight Inlet Lodge, Canada
Bear Lodges

Knight Inlet Lodge, Canada

In 1979, Blair McLean towed his floating fishing lodge from its former home in Hoeya Sound to the quiet and protected inlet of Glendale Cove. Nearly 40 years later, the lodge has established itself as one of the world’s top wilderness outposts. Surrounded by sedge, the spring snack of choice for hungry grizzlies coming out of hibernation, and with exclusive access to one of Knight Inlet's most prolific salmon-spawning channels, the lodge offers unrivalled grizzly bear-viewing experiences between May and October.

Knight Inlet Lodge

Sleep

Accommodation at Knight Inlet Lodge is simple yet very comfortable. As the lodge is entirely floating, each of the 20 en suite guest rooms are over water, sleeping up to four people if need be, although we would only really recommend this for parents travelling with young children. There are no interconnecting rooms, but we can request rooms close to or next to each other for families or larger groups travelling together.

Eat

Once you step off the seaplane at Knight Inlet Lodge, everything is taken care of for you. All meals are served buffet-style in the central dining room, offering a fabulous array of fresh British Columbian fare, from fish, seafood and sustainably sourced meat options for lunch and dinner each day. Breakfast starts at 6.30am so you’re fuelled up and ready for your first adventure, which begins at 7.30am. Similarly, lunch is served promptly at 12pm and dinner at 7pm. After a long day bear viewing, kayaking, hiking or exploring, pre-dinner appetisers are welcomed by all. Red and white wine are included with the evening meal, but if you fancy a cold beer, G&T or cocktail before sitting down to eat, the Knight Inlet bar offers a great selection of wine, beer, spirits and mixers, which can be charged to your room. While out and about, snacks are strictly not allowed unless for dietary reasons, so the bears and other wildlife do not start associating humans with food. Please do not fear though, in-between each activity you will be safely delivered back to the lodge for a quick cuppa and a freshly baked cookie or cake – one thing is for sure, you will not go hungry at Knight Inlet Lodge!

Play

Visiting a wilderness lodge is all about play. With over 20 years of experience, the team at Knight Inlet Lodge seriously know what they are doing and you will be looked after by some of the most knowledgeable and experienced guides on the west coast. Days are busy and run to a tight schedule, without being forced or overbearing. Although you are encouraged to try as many of the different tours as time permits, everything is very flexible and you will meet with the general manager before dinner each night to plan what you’d like to see and do the following day. Aside from the estuary tours, where you will have front row seats watching grizzly bears in their natural habitat, there are a multitude of other activities to enjoy, including inlet tours, rainforest hikes, tracking tours and cultural visits to neighbouring First Nations villages.
