Abai Jungle Lodge, Borneo

The simple but charming Abai Jungle Lodge, located on the banks of the Kinabatangan River is only accessible by a one hour boat journey from Sandakan (a short flight from Kota Kinabalu). The 24 chalets are simple wooden structures with twin beds, ensuite bathrooms and ceiling fans and due to its remote location the power is provided by solar panels and water collected in water tanks. The restaurant is located on the banks of the river offering simple but tasty local produce. The highlight of this lodge is not its accommodation, but more the experience it provides, which is second to none and well worth the journey.

As the lodge is located away from the main Sukau area (where many other lodges are located) you’ll enjoy the natural environment without sharing it with crowds of other boats. The lodge is very eco aware and works very closely with the local villages, offering opportunities to meet the locals, join their tree planting scheme and then the highlight a cruise down-river to spot wildlife such as exotic birds, the long-nosed proboscis monkey and perhaps an orangutan or two.

We recommend spending 2 nights at the lodge in order to fully experience the many activities on offer, or alternatively combine a night here with a night at their sister property, Kinabatangan Lodge, located upriver in Sukau. All packages will make a stop at the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, which cares for many orphaned apes arrival in Sandakan.
