Constance Moofushi Hotel & Resort, Maldives

If you've often wondered where Robinson Crusoe would stay if he ever did 'luxury', your answer is Constance Moofushi Hotel and Resort. Located on Barefoot Island, chic oozes from the resort's every speck of sand, whose fabulously laid-back vibes are completely in tune with its idyllic location. The island feels wonderfully pristine: the beach is footprint-free, the surrounding waters well and truly alive with marine life and an island which affords as much seclusion as you desire – perfect for honeymoons. As soon as you step off the seaplane you're on 'island time' – literally – as Constance Moofushi has even created its own time zone, an hour ahead of the rest of the Maldives, to ensure the sun sets at the perfect moment every day.

Located in the South Ari Atoll, Constance Moofushi is on the doorstep of a marine mecca that those considering a family holiday in the Maldives will love. The atoll is regularly labelled as one of the world's best dive sites, and the resort is within a 30-minute boat ride of no fewer than 32 dive sites, meaning countless opportunities to spot underwater celebrities like manta rays, whale sharks and turtles. You don't even need to leave your villa for a sprinkle of marine magic, however, as tropical fish and black-tipped reef sharks treat the stilts of the overwater bungalows as a playground. While there are plenty more things to do, the attention to detail at Constance Moofushi is focused on making your life as easy as possible, so you can carry on enjoying this pristine parcel of paradise. Robinson Crusoe would be proud.

Sleep

The accommodation here continues the rustic-chic vibe. In the case of Constance Moofushi, less is certainly more, with villas natural and stylish but never overdone. The decor inside is delicately inspired by the shells and waves which surround you and along with the high thatched ceilings, each villa has the air of a beachcomber's home. There are also subtle nods to Robinson Crusoe dotted throughout the resort, from the thoughtfully placed hammocks hanging over the private terraces to the mini bars disguised as treasure chests. The beautiful beach villas at Constance Moofushi are among some of our favourite land-based villas in all of the Maldives. Scattered along the beach, you can lie back and watch the sunset or perhaps just let all of your cares dissolve away as you sway to the rhythm of the waves in your hammock. The elegant stilted water villas are just as spacious, with furnished terraces equipped with steps leading straight into the crystal-clear lagoon below – ideal for romantic interludes or simply enjoying the utter serenity of your location. If you want total seclusion, the larger water villas are set further away from the island which not only guarantee ultimate privacy but boast an outdoor bathtub for soaking under a blanket of stars. The sand villas perched on stilts over the sand are a unique concept and great if you like the idea of being on stilts but close to the ocean.

Eat

As you'd expect at Constance Moofushi, the dining here is laid-back and and relaxed, rather than formal. With its sandy carpet, main restaurant Manta is barefoot dining at its best. It keeps menus fresh and exciting by changing its themes every evening – think Mexican-inspired menus on Mondays and Mediterranean meals every Thursday. The novelty is backed up by a unwavering stratospheric standard of cooking excellence, which is so high you'll find yourself asking for the recipe after every dish. Alizée is also on the beach but far more intimate, a grill that specialises in fish caught the same day and barbecued meat.

There are two bars at Constance Moofushi, each one with completely different atmospheres. Manta, which is adjoining the namesake restaurant, is the life and soul of the Moofushi party, a bar with its own resident DJ to keep you dancing as the stars climb higher into the sky. On the other hand, Totem is more of a chilled toes-in-the-sand affair, where you can have afternoon tea, a selection of thirst-quenching mocktails and freshly brewed iced teas.

Play

The South Ari Atoll is one of the best places in the world to go diving and you won't find many resorts better located than Constance Moofushi. There are 32 dive sites found within a 30-minute boat ride away, where you can go snorkelling and diving among clouds of orange anthias, porcupine fish, Napoleon fish and hawksbill turtles, among much more marine life. Whether you're a novice snorkeller or expert diver, there'll be a marine world here you can comfortably explore. The resort also lies within the migratory route of manta rays and whale sharks, which you can swim or snorkel with at certain times of the year (typically between October and April).

A huge number of non-motorised water sports at the resort are complimentary, including pedal boats, kayaking and windsurfing. On land, there's everything from giant chess and table football to marine biology talks and back of house tours.

Constance Moofushi also serves up a huge array of incredible experiences, too. Dolphin-spotting cruises, sandbank picnics and sunset cruises aboard a traditional dhoni are made for honeymooners, while sunset fishing and tours around a neighbouring local island are just two more activities you can get up to. No day needs to be the same at Constance Moofushi.

Pamper

Constance Moofushi's gorgeous pool is curved to reflect the shape of the beach and is angled so every sun lounger has epic views of the Indian Ocean. The Constance Spa is set overwater, with all eight of the treatment rooms housed within their own private wooden hut. There's a comprehensive range of massages, facials and treatments, all of which use natural products inspired by plants inspired by the Indian Ocean and designed to rejuvenate your mind, body and soul. If that wasn't relaxing enough, a glass-bottom floor is perfectly positioned at the head of your spa bed so you can also watch the marine life below.
